Personal data is any information that can be used to identify a person. For example: your employee’s name and surname, personal number indicated in the contract, amount of the employee’s salary. Personal data is a customer’s e-mail address that he/she uses to sign up for your services; customer’s bank account number used to buy your product online;
Personal data are contained in the video footage recorded by the camera that you installed, correspondence exchanged between you and the customer via e-mail or Facebook messenger on your official page;
There is a special category of data too. Information related to a person’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophic beliefs, trade union membership, health, sex life, conviction, administrative detention, application of measure of constraint, Information about the conclusion of plea bargain, diversion, gaining crime victim status. Special category also comprises of biometric and genetic data, that may be used to identify a person with the above-listed features.
Special category of data differs from “ordinary” data in that the law establishes a higher standard for their protection and violation of these rules results in a more severe sanction.
