The Institute of the Personal Data Protection Inspector was established in 2013 on the basis of Georgian Law on the Personal Data Protection. The Inspector controls and supervises the implementation of the personal data protection legislation and legitimacy of personal data processing.
The basic directions of the Inspector’s activities are:
- Consulting public and private organizations on the issues related to the personal data protection;
- Dealing with the citizens’ complaints;
- Inspecting the lawfulness of the data processing;
- Informing public on the data protection situation in the country and other related issues.
The principles of the activities of the Inspector are: legality, respect and protection of the human rights and freedoms, independence and political neutrality, impartiality, professionalism, protection of the professional confidentiality and secrecy.
The Inspector is independent and is not subordinated to any public body or public official. Any influence on or interference within the activities of the Inspector is prohibited and punished by law.
The Inspector is inviolable. No criminal proceedings may be instituted against him/her, he/she may not be arrested or detained, and his/her apartment, vehicle, office, as well as he/she himself/herself may not be searched without the consent of the Parliament of Georgia. The exemption is being caught in flagrante delicto that shall be immediately reported to the Parliament.
On July 1, 2013 Mrs. Tamar Kaldani was appointed as the Personal Data Protection Inspector of Georgia. On July 2, 2016 she was elected by the Parliament of Georgia as the Personal Data Protection Inspector of Georgia for three years.

Participant of more than 100 international conferences, teaching programs, trainings and meetings on legal aid, procedural rights, freedom of information, anti-corruption, budget transparency, protection of personal data and privacy. Panelist and expert at the data protection roundtable as well as the roundtable for sharing experience with the newly established personal data protection supervisory bodies, organized by the Council of Europe, workshop on the recent European regulations organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross, International Conference on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Personal Data Protection Law in Poland, 19th Meeting of the Central and Eastern Europe Data Protection Authorities (CEEDPA), 27th and 28th Annual Spring Conference of the European Data Protection Authorities, 59th Meeting of the International Working Group on Data Protection in Telecommunications (Berlin Group).
